The first collaboratively created comic of our current Lottery funded project Teamwork Tales is finished with more soon to follow!
“Real Magic” is an original comic produced by a team of men attending Menscraft’s GRIPS group (Group Re-integration Peer Support), where men with offending histories are encouraged to positively support each other and develop a growth mindset.
As well as dealing with the stigma of being labelled as ‘offenders’ every one of them comes from a background of complex trauma and several are neuro-divergent.
The comic follows the tragic adventure of a hubristic magician in late 1800’s New York - his rise and fall, and eventual redemption.
Colin Howey, Menscraft project coordinator had this to say about the project:
“None had ever been involved in a creative collective before and all felt a feeling of pride and achievement with the final comic.
It was also important that they got to weave in their experiences into the narrative and one member said to me, ‘it felt good to turn something bad (offending) into something positive’ (comic/creative expression).
Being involved in this project definitely gave them confidence and self-esteem.
The creators were delighted with their comic and felt very proud to have contributed to something that looked so ‘professional’.
